When the BJP-led NDA came to power in 1998, the government of India's human resource development minister Dr. Murali Manohar Joshi included 'Priesthood and Ritualism' into school curriculum. During his time, astrology began to be taught instead of science-based astronomy. Learning how to perform the Putrakameshthi Yajna, a (Vedic) ritual to get a male child was also introduced. They are inculcating unfounded beliefs and foolishness into children's minds. Recalling Golwalkar's call for involvement in RSS activities to be essentially devoid of any critical thinking and discernment, once they are in power, they have set about implementing this in children's education. Recently, CBSE has removed several topics from their syllabus. Of these, topics such as democracy and diversity, impact of globalization on agriculture, popular (mass), movements and communalism were removed from the Class 10 syllabus. It is for this kind of school curriculum excisions that the RSS has nurtured one of its offsprings, the 'Shiksha Sanskriti Uttahn Nyas. It has consistently been pressurizing NCERT to remove from textbooks, allusions to 'the former prime minister Manmohan Singh's magnanimous apology for the Sikh riots', and the 'killing of around two thousand Muslims in the 2002 Gujarat riots'. This is their chicanery.

My mum remembers Coca-Cola coming to the country for the first time.
The first time that bottled coke, in the sleek glass bottles with the elaborately painted logo, was sold out of crates and chillers by a vendor who would cycle from house to house, stacked crates in tow.
They'd seen them before, of course. Granddad was very well-travelled, his work took him across the country and occasionally overseas. It made him a knowledgeable, well-read and respected man. He'd been abroad: Malaysia, Germany, Indonesia, other places I wasn't told about. He'd seen Coca-Colas. He was an adventurer of sorts, which I suppose shouldn't seem too out of the ordinary for someone who had chosen a career of tinkering with chemicals professionally. Wherever he travelled, mum recounted, he'd bring back a little souvenir. Music from abroad, posters, books, branded sweets that weren't sold in protectionist India.
It wasn't an unreasonable decision. After 200 years of being leached dry and Indian industry being virtually nonexistent, it wasn't hard to see why post-colonial India had closed off its domestic industries to outsiders. The government took control of most local trade and incentivised the Indian economy to grow without competition from wealthier players (at that point, there were companies that were wealthier than the entire nation of India).
This did however mean that no international products were sold in India. Imports were limited to the most basic parts and things that could not be procured locally, often raw materials. Coca-Cola was limited to glimpses in foreign films, and of course, to those who travelled. (Nothing was banned, of course. It was about the economy, not access to international goods.)
This changed in 1991. Finance Minister Manmohan Singh's decision to deliberately devalue the rupee, open up the tightly-controlled Indian market for trade and usher in the age of globalisation introduced the world to India again, this time in its local paan shop (or cornershop, aware of the fact that like 3 people that follow me at best will know what that means). Mum remembers buying Coca Cola for the first time, in rupees, locally in 1991 as a girl. It sounds like a very small and trivial thing, but it was part of a decision that changed the Indian economy's fortunes forever.
From a country that had maybe two weeks' worth of forex reserves in tow, India evolved to become one of the fastest-growing GDPs in the world. It was once again Dr. Manmohan Singh's policies, this time as Prime Minister in 2008, that meant India escaped the worst of the global financial crisis. The economy didn't crash, didn't go into recession, fewer jobs were lost, and largely, India emerged unscathed compared to larger economies out west.
But I think about some of these little things, and how he changed the country forever, as the nation observes his passing today.

Manmohan Singh: The Unassuming Architect Behind India's Economic Transformation
Tumblr media
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92, was a pivotal figure in shaping modern India’s economic landscape. Often regarded as the “father of economic reforms,” Manmohan Singh’s contributions to Indian politics and economics have left an indelible mark on the nation. His tenure as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 was particularly transformative, as he spearheaded a series of liberalization policies that rescued India from a severe economic crisis and set the stage for unprecedented growth.

M T Vasudevan Nair and Manmohan Singh: Reflections of a Malayalee Indian
It is difficult to be untouched by the passing away of these two individuals for a Malayalee Indian. I never developed a deep interest in literature during my adulthood. Mine was more of a scientist-engineer and economist mind set. However even for me, reading MT was an unavoidable phase in life. The loneliness within big families, the difficulties in adjusting relationships to the prevalent…

Manmohan Singh: A Visionary Leader Defined by Humility and Courage
Tumblr media
Dr. Manmohan Singh followed those great leaders and himself he was a visionary leader, courageous, and full of integrity, marking his career. I first met Dr. Singh in the late 1960s in New York; he was with the United Nations and I was with New York University. We first worked together on the Board much later in the mid-1980s when he was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and I was appointed as Deputy Governor. I found out how brilliant, hardworking, and self-effacing he was, and how he could mobilize people to his way of thinking.
Three qualities distinguished Dr. Singh: three commodities, vision, courage, and humility. His ability to conceptualize was the mark of his leadership because he hatched long-range goals for the country's benefit. This, of course, went hand in hand with the ability to make rather aggressive, or at least unpopular, decisions. However, as chief of one of the most vital agencies in the country, he never lost his humility. He created an atmosphere that enabled communication and dialogue and where everyone got a chance to be heard and decisions were sanctioned from the collective range.
He is best remembered for the part he played in the 1991 economic liberalization process of India. The 1991 economic reforms and Mr. Chidambaram was also the Finance Minister of India and he had to manage the country through one of the blackest days of its economic history. His reforms shifted the economic growth of the country to liberalization and Globalization. Ideas like these are normally good on paper, but they need to be implemented and Dr. Singh did that very well. He always promoted proper discussions when people disagreed and then made certain that better ideas came out on top.
On leadership, one can among other things identify the elimination of ad-hoc treasury bills which sustained the automatic monetization of fiscal deficits. He agreed with the minister’s move when I gave details of their adverse effects on the economy despite going up the cost of government borrowing. Likewise, in the early period of moving toward a market-determined exchange rate, he blocked demands for gradualism understanding that the long-term gains from decisive action are far superior to the costs incurred. Such choices vindiated the technical clout but majorly they were daring enough to act against the resistance which Dr. Singh was so vocal about.
These attributes of his nature were unimpeachable: he was, in the simplest terms, selfless and sincere. When the rupee was devalued in 1991, while the new standards allowed me to obtain additional foreign assets with my new increased rupee value, I cashed a cheque to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for an equivalent amount. For him, everything has to bow to the nation and this is the reason that he follows this principle in everything he does.
While being Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 years Dr. Singh also worked for India’s further development. While in power, he recorded an impressive economic growth point that saw the country grow at above 9% for the fiscal year 2005/2006 to 2008/2009. He also identified efficiency and competitiveness as the keys to India’s success in the global market. The principles contained in his policies focused on building a foundation of sustainable development, if not growth, let alone the growth annually expected in the short term.
The profile of  Manmohan Singh showcases a life dedicated to public service, marked by vision, courage, and integrity. Dr. Manmohan Singh was Born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab, India he was been born in a poor family in the village of Gohaniwala. After obtaining his degrees at Cambridge and Oxford he was successful in academics, as a bureaucrat, and as a politician. As a result of the outstanding education he has received, he was very humble, friendly, and patriotic at heart nonetheless.
Time will tell that Dr. Singh made history as one of India’s finest leaders, a philosopher, theorist, and diplomat. His life fully testified that if one is to become great he must become a great servant and a humble one at that. In a very subtle manner, he decided the fate of India and set the pace for more such brave steps in the future. This tribute to Manmohan Singh acknowledges his profound impact on India’s history.
